27 Best Free SEO Tools
in 2026, Tested and Honest

No trials. No gimmicks. No “free for 7 days.” This is a list of tools that are genuinely free or have a free tier worth using, with the freemium limitations clearly stated for each one. Includes the tools the existing page misses entirely: Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog free tier, and Rank Math free. Plus an honest skip list for tools that are dead in 2026.

I’ve been using free SEO tools as the foundation of client work since 2015. The three tools I install on every new client site before anything else are Google Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, and Screaming Frog, all free. The tool stack I recommend below is what I actually use, not a list assembled from affiliate commissions.

Most free SEO tools lists are written by people who haven’t opened half the tools they’re recommending. Xenu Link Sleuth appears on lists published in 2026 because the author copied it from a 2019 list. Beam Us Up appears because nobody checked whether it still works. Robots.txt generator sections run to 700 words because padding inflates word count.

This list is built differently. Every tool below was checked as of May 2026. The free vs freemium distinction is clearly marked, because “free” and “limited free tier” are very different things. And three tools from the current BAB page that should never have been included are now in the skip section with an honest explanation of why.

Free vs Freemium: What the Labels Mean in This Article

The most misleading thing about free SEO tools lists is calling freemium tools “free.” A freemium tool has a free tier that is deliberately limited to push upgrades. A genuinely free tool has no caps, no expiry, and no credit system on its core functionality. Knowing the difference saves you from building a workflow around something that stops working when you hit a limit.

Label used in this articleWhat it meansExamples
FULLY FREENo caps, no credits, no expiry on core features. Use as much as you want forever.Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, Google Keyword Planner, Screaming Frog Log Analyser
FREEMIUMFree tier exists but has meaningful limits: URL caps, daily search limits, result truncation, or feature gating.Screaming Frog (500 URL cap), Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (own sites only), Moz Link Explorer (10 queries/month)
SKIPListed as free on older articles but unmaintained, broken on modern sites, or replaced by better free alternatives.Xenu Link Sleuth, Beam Us Up, Small SEO Tools
On Ahrefs Webmaster Tools specifically
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools deserves a clear explanation because it is the most powerful free SEO tool most people have never used. It is free for any site you verify ownership of, giving you the full Ahrefs backlink index, site audit, and organic keyword data for your own domain. The limitation is that you cannot use it for competitor research. For that you need a paid Ahrefs plan from $129/month. But for auditing your own site’s backlink profile, finding technical issues, and seeing your organic keyword rankings, it is genuinely free and genuinely powerful.

The 3-Tool Minimum Stack That Covers 80% of SEO Needs

Before listing every tool in every category, the single most useful thing I can tell you is what to install first. These three tools together form a complete SEO foundation that covers keyword visibility, backlink analysis, and technical auditing, all at zero cost. Every paid tool you eventually add supplements this stack; nothing replaces it.

01 Fully free
Google Search Console
First-party Google data on every query your pages appear for, every indexing issue, every Core Web Vitals failure, and every manual action. Non-negotiable. No paid tool gives you this data more accurately because no paid tool is Google. Install this before anything else on any site. As of 2026, GSC also shows AI Overview impression data, making it the only free AI search visibility tool available.
02 Freemium (own sites only)
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
Free site audit, backlink overview, and organic keyword data for any site you verify ownership of. The backlink data comes from Ahrefs’ full index, the same database behind a $129/month paid plan, just restricted to your own domains. For understanding your site’s backlink profile and finding critical technical issues, this is the most powerful free tool available. It is the biggest omission from the existing BAB page on this topic.
03 Freemium (500 URL cap)
Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free)
Crawls up to 500 URLs free and surfaces most critical technical SEO issues: broken links, missing meta titles and descriptions, duplicate content, redirect chains, missing canonical tags. For sites under 500 pages, the free tier covers everything you need. For larger sites, the paid licence at £259 per year is the best value in technical SEO tooling. This is the industry standard technical audit tool and another major omission from the current page.
💡
The 5-tool stack
Add Google Keyword Planner (free search volume data from Google) and Google Analytics 4 (free traffic and conversion tracking) to the three above and you have a complete five-tool stack covering keyword research, backlink analysis, technical auditing, rank tracking, and traffic analysis. The whole stack costs nothing. Everything below this point in this article builds on this foundation.

Free Keyword Research Tools

🔍
Google Search Console Fully free
The most accurate keyword data available, first-party, from Google itself
GSC’s Performance report shows every query your pages appeared for in Google search, with click data, impression data, CTR, and average position. This is more accurate than any paid keyword tool’s estimates because it is real data from Google rather than third-party modelling. For understanding which keywords your existing content ranks for, there is no better free tool, and no better paid tool either. Use the Queries report filtered by low CTR and high impressions to find your easiest quick wins: pages Google is already showing but that need better meta titles and descriptions to earn more clicks.

📊
Google Keyword Planner Fully free
The only free source of actual Google search volume data
Requires a Google Ads account (free to create, no spend required). Gives you keyword ideas and search volume ranges directly from Google’s database. The limitation is that volume is presented in broad ranges (1K-10K) unless you run active ad campaigns. Despite this, it is the most authoritative free source for understanding relative search demand across keyword ideas. Essential for any keyword research workflow that cannot access paid tools like Ahrefs or Semrush.

Best for

📈
Google Trends Fully free
Relative search interest over time, essential for timing content to demand peaks
Shows relative search popularity of any query over time, by region, and compared against other queries. Gives absolute search volume numbers. Use it to: identify seasonal content opportunities, compare whether a keyword is growing or declining before investing in it, spot emerging topics before they peak, and find related queries you may have missed. Best used alongside Keyword Planner, Trends shows direction, Planner shows scale.

AlsoAsked Freemium
Maps People Also Asked question clusters, essential for FAQ and content structure
Enter any keyword and AlsoAsked maps the full PAA question tree Google shows for that query, including second and third-level questions that expand when users click on first-level questions. This is the fastest way to understand what supplementary questions your content needs to answer to be eligible for PAA featured snippets. Free for limited searches per month; paid plans from $15/month for unlimited. Even the free tier is useful for researching primary keywords.

📋
Keyword Sheeter Fully free
Bulk Google autocomplete extraction, hundreds of keyword ideas in seconds
Enter a seed keyword and Keyword Sheeter rapidly extracts hundreds or thousands of Google autocomplete suggestions. Completely free, no account required. The output is a raw keyword list without volume data, use it alongside Keyword Planner to find ideas then validate demand. Particularly useful for finding long-tail variations and question-based keywords that autocomplete surfaces but that standard keyword tools miss.

🔗
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools Freemium (own sites only)
The most powerful free backlink tool available, and the biggest omission from most free tools lists
Verify ownership of your site in Ahrefs and you get the full Ahrefs backlink index for your domain, the same data behind a $129/month paid plan, plus site audit, organic keyword rankings, and organic traffic estimates. This is not a stripped-down version; it is the full Ahrefs dataset restricted to sites you own. For any site owner who wants to understand their backlink profile, find toxic links, see which pages have the most link equity, or identify technical SEO issues, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is the answer. It is genuinely free and genuinely professional-grade. The only limitation: you cannot research competitor domains without a paid plan.
Cost

🌐
Moz Link Explorer Freemium (10 queries/month)
Domain Authority scores and basic backlink data, useful for quick competitor checks
Free users get 10 link queries per month showing Domain Authority, Page Authority, backlink count, and spam score for any domain. The 10-query limit makes it unsuitable as a primary research tool but useful for spot-checking a competitor or evaluating a potential guest posting publisher before reaching out. DA is the most widely recognised link authority metric in the industry, knowing it for any domain takes 30 seconds with Moz’s free tool.

Free Technical SEO and Site Audit Tools

🐸
Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free) Freemium (500 URL cap)
Industry standard technical audit tool, 500 URLs free, handles modern JavaScript sites
Download and install, point at your domain, and Screaming Frog crawls your site the same way Googlebot does. The free tier crawls up to 500 URLs and surfaces broken links, missing or duplicate meta titles and descriptions, redirect chains, missing canonical tags, thin content pages, and image alt text issues. For sites under 500 pages, the free tier covers everything a technical SEO audit requires. Unlike Xenu and Beam Us Up, Screaming Frog is actively maintained and handles JavaScript-rendered pages correctly, which is essential for any modern website. The paid licence is £259 per year and removes the URL cap entirely.
Cost
Free (500 URLs) / £259/yr paid

📁
Screaming Frog Log File Analyser Fully free
See exactly how and when Googlebot crawls your site, no URL cap, completely free
Upload your server log files and the Log Analyser shows exactly which pages Googlebot crawled, how often it visited each page, which pages it ignored, and whether its crawl patterns match your priority pages. This level of Googlebot behaviour data is available nowhere else for free, enterprise tools like Botify and Lumar charge thousands per month for equivalent analysis. Requires server log access, which you get from your hosting provider. Fully free with no limitations.

Google PageSpeed Insights Fully free
Core Web Vitals with real Chrome user data, the most authoritative speed source
Enter any URL and PageSpeed Insights returns two datasets: lab data (simulated performance in a controlled environment) and field data (real Core Web Vitals from Chrome users who visited that page). The field data, LCP, INP, and CLS, is what Google’s ranking algorithm uses. No third-party speed tool gives you this; it comes directly from Chrome’s User Experience Report. Start every speed investigation here before moving to more diagnostic tools like WebPageTest.

Lighthouse (Chrome DevTools) Fully free
Built into Chrome, performance, accessibility, SEO, and PWA audits in one report
Open Chrome DevTools (F12), go to the Lighthouse tab, and run an audit on any page. Returns performance scores, accessibility scores, SEO scores, and PWA compliance, all in one report. The SEO audit checks for missing meta tags, robots directives, canonical issues, mobile-friendliness, and structured data. Best run in incognito mode to avoid extension interference. Free On-Page and Content SEO Tools

🏆
Rank Math (free WordPress plugin) Fully free
Better than Yoast free, schema builder, GSC integration, and AI suggestions included at no cost
Rank Math’s free tier is the most capable free WordPress SEO plugin available. It includes on-page optimisation scoring with actionable suggestions, a built-in schema markup builder (Article, FAQPage, Product, Local Business, and more), direct Google Search Console integration showing GSC data inside WordPress, internal linking suggestions, and 404 monitoring. Yoast SEO’s free tier covers the basics but gates schema markup and several other features behind the paid version at $99/year. Rank Math gives all of this free. If you run a WordPress site and aren’t using Rank Math, install it today.

Yoast SEO (free) Fully free
The longest-established WordPress SEO plugin, solid free tier for basics
Yoast free covers meta title and description management, XML sitemaps, canonical URL control, readability scoring, and basic on-page SEO analysis. The free tier is more limited than Rank Math free but if you already have Yoast installed and have built workflows around it, there is no urgent reason to switch. Schema markup, internal linking suggestions, and redirect management are gated behind Yoast Premium at $99/year. For new WordPress installations, start with Rank Math free instead.

📊
Google Analytics 4 Fully free
Traffic, user behaviour, and conversion tracking, non-negotiable alongside GSC
GA4 tracks every visitor to your site, where they came from, what they did, how long they stayed, and whether they converted. The event-based model tracks cross-platform journeys (website and app in the same property). Integrates directly with Google Search Console and Google Ads. The only meaningful limitation is that GA4 uses data sampling for very high-traffic properties on the free tier. For sites under a few million sessions per month, the free version provides complete, unsampled data. Install alongside Google Search Console, the two together answer nearly every traffic and ranking question you have.

🕰️
Wayback Machine Fully free
Historical snapshots of any web page, invaluable for competitive research and content recovery
The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine stores snapshots of web pages over time. Use it to: see what a competitor’s page looked like before a major redesign, recover content from a page that was accidentally deleted, check what SEO elements (title, meta, heading structure) a well-ranking page used before changes were made, and understand the history of a domain before buying or acquiring it. Redirect Detective Fully free
Check redirect chains on any URL, shows every hop, type, and status code
Enter any URL and Redirect Detective shows the complete redirect path: every intermediate URL, the redirect type (301, 302, meta refresh), and the final destination. Useful for checking that external links pointing to your site are landing where expected, that old URLs have been properly redirected after migrations, and that redirect chains are not exceeding two hops (each additional hop reduces the link equity passed).

BuiltWith (free tier) Freemium
Technology detection for any site, know what CMS, plugins, and analytics a competitor uses
Enter any domain and BuiltWith shows the technology stack: CMS platform, JavaScript frameworks, analytics tools, advertising pixels, CDN provider, email service, payment processors, and more. The free tier shows basic technology detection for individual sites. Paid plans add historical data and bulk analysis. Useful for competitor research (understanding what tools a well-ranking competitor uses), pre-migration planning (understanding what an acquired site runs on), and link prospecting (finding sites built on specific platforms).
Cost
Free (basic) / paid for advanced
📱
Google Mobile-Friendly Test Fully free
Confirms mobile rendering and identifies mobile usability issues
Confirms whether Google can render your page correctly on mobile and flags specific mobile usability issues: text too small, clickable elements too close together, content wider than screen. Google uses mobile-first indexing, the mobile version of your page is what gets ranked, not the desktop version. Mobile usability issues in GSC should be treated as ranking issues, not just UX issues. The Mobile-Friendly Test shows the rendered page as Googlebot sees it on mobile, which reveals rendering failures that desktop testing misses.

Free SEO Tools Worth Skipping in 2026

Several tools appear on free SEO tools lists purely because they were on older lists that newer articles copied without checking. These three have no place on a 2026 list.

Skip immediately

Xenu Link Sleuth: Last updated around 2010. Fails on JavaScript-rendered pages, which is the vast majority of modern websites. Completely replaced by Screaming Frog free tier (500 URLs, actively maintained, handles JavaScript). No reason to use Xenu in 2026.

Skip immediately

Beam Us Up: Development stopped. Same JavaScript rendering limitations as Xenu. Was a reasonable alternative to Screaming Frog in 2018 for Mac users, but has not kept pace with modern web standards. Screaming Frog free tier is available for Mac and does everything Beam Us Up does, better.

Skip immediately

Small SEO Tools: A collection of basic single-purpose utilities (plagiarism checker, keyword density counter, word counter) that duplicate free features already available in Google Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, and Google PageSpeed Insights. No depth, no data accuracy advantage over Google’s own free tools. Wastes time that would be better spent in GSC.

📝
On the robots.txt generator
The existing page on this topic dedicates 700+ words across two duplicate sections to robots.txt generators. A robots.txt generator is a simple utility that takes 30 seconds to use. It does not warrant extensive review. If you need one: Rank Math includes a robots.txt editor built directly into WordPress. For non-WordPress sites, any plain text editor works, the syntax is four lines long. Spending 700 words on this topic is the SEO equivalent of padding, which is exactly the kind of content Google’s quality guidelines penalise.
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best free SEO tools in 2026?
The five that form a complete professional foundation: Google Search Console (first-party Google data, non-negotiable), Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free backlink overview and site audit for verified sites), Screaming Frog free tier (crawls 500 URLs, surfaces critical technical issues), Google Keyword Planner (accurate free search volume data), and Google Analytics 4 (traffic and conversion tracking). These five together cover keyword research, backlink analysis, technical auditing, and performance monitoring at zero cost.
Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools really free?
Yes, for any site you verify ownership of. You get the full Ahrefs backlink index, site audit, and organic keyword data for your own domain at no cost. The limitation is that you cannot use it for competitor research without a paid Ahrefs plan from $129 per month. For auditing your own site’s backlink profile and technical health, it is genuinely free and genuinely professional-grade.
What is the difference between free and freemium SEO tools?
A free SEO tool has no usage caps or expiry on core functionality, Google Search Console, GA4, and Google PageSpeed Insights are genuinely free. A freemium tool has a free tier with meaningful limits: Screaming Frog caps free crawls at 500 URLs, Moz Link Explorer at 10 queries per month, and AlsoAsked at limited monthly searches. Most SEO tools listed as free are actually freemium. This article labels every tool clearly so you know what to expect before building a workflow around it.
Can I do SEO with only free tools?
Yes, for most sites under 50,000 monthly visitors. Google Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog free tier, Google Keyword Planner, and Google Analytics 4 together cover keyword research, backlink analysis, technical auditing, and traffic tracking at zero cost. The main gap is competitor intelligence: researching competitor backlink profiles or keyword rankings requires a paid tool. But for understanding and improving your own site’s SEO, the free stack is sufficient.
Is Screaming Frog free worth using?
Yes. The free tier crawls up to 500 URLs and finds broken links, missing meta data, duplicate content, redirect chains, and missing canonical tags. For sites under 500 pages it covers everything a technical audit needs. Actively maintained and handles modern JavaScript-rendered sites correctly, which Xenu and Beam Us Up, both still appearing on older lists, cannot do.
Why should I avoid Xenu and Beam Us Up?
Xenu Link Sleuth has not been updated since approximately 2010 and fails on JavaScript-rendered pages, which is the majority of modern websites. Beam Us Up stopped active development and has the same compatibility issues. Screaming Frog free tier replaces both completely, it is actively maintained, handles JavaScript, is available for Windows and Mac, and crawls 500 URLs free. There is no situation in 2026 where Xenu or Beam Us Up is the better choice.
What free tools can I use for keyword research?
Four genuinely useful free options: Google Keyword Planner (search volume ranges directly from Google), Google Trends (relative interest over time, seasonal patterns), AlsoAsked (People Also Asked question clusters, free for limited searches), and Keyword Sheeter (bulk Google autocomplete extraction, completely free). Google Search Console also shows which queries your existing pages rank for, often the most actionable keyword data available.
Does Google Search Console track AI Overview impressions?
Yes. As of 2026, Google Search Console includes AI Overview impression and click data in the Performance report. Filter by Search Type to isolate AI Overview queries. This makes GSC the only free tool for monitoring AI search visibility, and one more reason it is the first thing to install on any website.
Summary

Building Your Free SEO Tool Stack

The honest conclusion: you do not need paid tools to do competent SEO on a site under 50,000 monthly visitors. Google Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog free tier, Google Keyword Planner, and Google Analytics 4 form a complete professional foundation at zero cost. Every tool in this article beyond those five adds specific utility in specific situations, but the five are the foundation that everything builds on.

The thing free tools cannot do is competitor intelligence at scale. Understanding what backlinks your competitors have, what keywords they rank for that you don’t, and where the link-building opportunities are in your niche requires a paid tool, Ahrefs at $129/month or Semrush at $139.95/month. That is what the paid tools are for. Our complete SEO tools list covers the paid options across every category with real pricing and honest comparisons.

And when the free tools show you the backlink gaps, which they will, clearly, that is where we come in. Our link building service and guest posting service build the editorial placements that close those gaps. Our link building statistics guide covers the research on what backlinks actually produce in ranking outcomes.
